lawmakers call for Burris perjury prob

Sen. Roland Burris admitted Saturday that former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s brother asked him for a campaign contribution before the governor appointed Burris to the Senate.

The disclosure is at odds with Burris’ testimony in January when an Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked if he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.

State Rep. Jim Durkin, the impeachment committee’s ranking Republican, told The Associated Press that he and House Republican Leader Tom Cross would seek an outside investigation into whether Burris perjured himself. Continue reading

Illinois Senate removes impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich

The so called kangaroo courtor  Illinois Senate on Thursday voted unanimously to remove impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office.

Blagojevich was arrested on federal corruption charges in December. Federal authorities allege, among other things, that he was trying to sell or trade the Senate seat that became vacant after Barack Obama was elected president. After the governor’s arrest, the state House voted overwhelmingly to impeach him.

A second vote, to prevent him from holding future state office, also passed unanimously.

Earlier, the two-term Democratic governor — who avoided the first three days of his trial, opting instead for a national media blitz — gave a closing argument to the Senate. He said he had done nothing wrong.

Today in an interview with NBC, disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) compared himself to human rights heros Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi. Speaking to The Today Show, Blagojevich said that as the indictment became public, he “thought about Mandela, Dr. King and Gandhi and tried to put some perspective to all this.” Last week, Blagojevich compared his arrest to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“I think that, if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender against some of the political shots that we’ve taken…I’m not doin’ this for naught,” Palin told ABC’s Elizabeth Vargas on being asked.

Illinois House Impeaches Governor Blagojevich

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impeach Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich on Friday morning on the grounds of abuse of power as the state’s chief executive. He is the first governor in Illinois’s history to be impeached, and his case now goes to the state Senate for trial.

The House deliberated less than an hour and a half before voting 114 to 1 to oust the governor, just one day after a 21-member House investigative committee unanimously recommended impeachment. The only member to vote against impeachment was Milton Patterson, a Democrat from Chicago. No one spoke up to defend Mr. Blagojevich.

The last governor to be impeached was Evan Mecham of Arizona, who was removed from office in 1988 after serving 15 months.

Mr. Blagojevich, 52, was jogging in his Chicago neighborhood when the vote came down. He has scheduled a press

conference this afternoon.

Legislators spent the morning discussing the merits of the case against Mr. Blagojevich, the two-term Democrat who
